The Cops and I Had a Special “Understanding”

Then I got out and I went in January and got out in May I think. So, after that I drove a truck – went back to driving a truck and in ’49 I had a little accident out east of town here. I dropped 18 feet with a truck and tore up 35 feet of bridge floor! (Laughs)

Well, I was just going along here and BANG! The front wheels dropped in, I shifted gears around and brought the front end up and the back end settled.

I was driving a ’49 GMC Tandem and it totaled it. Had 7,000 miles on it.

So then after that, got over that deal, got another Tandem and it was only run about 45 miles an hour loaded, all the other trucks would pass me, so what did they do?

They’d send State Patrol out when all the trucks were passing me because they were speeding, and State Patrol always pulled me over. When they’d see the State Patrol had me they knew they better slow down.

But, after quitting time he always wanted a load of stone (Laughs). He lived down here out in the country and I’ll haul him a load of stone out and dump it for him and that would be it.

Oh yeah, he would always overload me when I was getting a load of stone for him but that’s alright!

That old Patrol is dead now. Used to be when we had Patrol, the Sherriff and the City Police. B back in them days when they wanted something they called me. They always called National and leave their phone number and I’d have to return the call. They always wanted a load of stone or they wanted dirt or they wanted sand, one of three (laughs) and I was always the one to haul it to them.

I was always working out at National. My brother see, he was getting in with the law enforcement so they didn’t bother us on overload (Laughs).

But they’d see me speeding they’d just wave their hands and that was it! (Laughs) The Chief of Police, he was a nice old boy. I used to haul stone for his son. His son married a cousin but he didn’t know that. Didn’t know I was related to him.
