My folks were farmers and I’m an only child. My mother was an only child.

Growing up was rather difficult. There were no close neighbors so you sort of grew up by yourself. I remember some things about how I entertained myself and things like that.

When you look back, in some respects your parents were real close in as far as development is concerned and in other respects you were left pretty much for yourself. Today, kids have all kinds of electronic gadgets for teaching one thing or another. Back then about all you had was a couple of building blocks (Laughs). So, I don’t know.

My parents were industrious, hard-working people, you know? Much of your farm work was all hand labor at that time. It wasn’t until maybe the mid 20s or something like that that they started getting a lot of mechanized equipment.
