I Was the Oldest of Five Children, and Probably the Orneriest

Well, my dad was a pattern maker and he worked at several jobs. At one time he was superintendent of the Clay Pot Company that made clay pots that they melted sand in to make glass. That was during the gas boom years, then after that they moved the pottery company to Pennsylvania. I think it was Washington, Pennsylvania where it went, but he didn’t like it over there so he came back and we always lived around here then.

I was the oldest of five children and probably the orneriest too! (Laughter) But, oh…went through high school, graduated in ’36 during the Depression. I got a well-paying job at a drug store for ten dollars a week, seven days a week! I got every other Sunday off if things worked out. (Laughs)

My mom was a pretty good mother. Good homemaker, good cook.
