I was born in Caterinas, Texas. Then from there my mother took me over to stay with my grandmother close to Laredo, Mexico - to keep my grandmother company. It was only my grandmother and my uncle because my grandfather was killed by a rattlesnake.

I was there, and it was on the ranch. Then, I stayed with my grandmother. When I was there I think I was around 7 or 8 years old.

Then my mother came and got me when I was around 12 or 13. My uncle got married and his wife kept my grandmother company. They wanted me to stay but my mother said, ’you’d better come with me, you’re grandmother got company now’, and this and that.
