Florence Louise Light was born on December 17, 1928, youngest child of John James Light (1899-1990) and Florence Mildreth Casey (1907-1981) in Astoria, New York. She had one brother, John "Jack" Light (1926-1982).

Her nickname was "Sis". When she was asked who gave her this nickname and why, she replied "The Campbell Soup Kid".
