Mother Always Said: “Make Sure You Travel Before you Settle Down”

My mother would always mention it to me visit our maternal grandparents in Hamilton, Ontario. That was a big deal. They used to make sure to take us to museums and movies and the live philharmonic and things in the park. Although I lived a farm I got a really good education in that way. I had all of these things I could do, things I was exposed to.

And my mother was a dreamer. She wanted to travel but she couldn’t. She was constrained by the farm and her family. I don’t know what time in my life it started but my mother always used to say to me: “make sure you travel before you settle down. See the world. Do what you want to do. Don’t get tied down.”

I think that she felt she missed out on travel. She did get to travel a little bit later in life as the kids grew up and my dad sold various farms but she only lived until she was 56. So she didn’t get to travel much.

I haven’t instilled trouble in my kids much. I should think by example they would want to. I guess I’m more interested in their spiritual well being. I’m more interested in getting a movie such as “The Secret” than making sure they traveled. However I really would like to take my kids to places such as Macchu Picchu and the pyramids.

My son Heriberto is now locked into family life.

You know work is like breathing for me. I really enjoy what I do. I think I have a fabulous profession. It’s so easy! I love it here; I love living here. I can tell people why I came here and what I love about the area. They don’t have to buy here but at least they have the panorama of what it’s all about as seen through my eyes.
