We Pioneered Surfing on Michigan Lakes

We always vacationed in Michigan. We always had a boat. We had a playmate 90 horse – like a little convertible. It was like a little convertible. It was a good powered, twin hull job. And the kids did waterskiing.

One my husband built a surf board and my first experience (Laughs), riding a surf board was he went around a corner too fast and I took off over the water. I realized we were in big trouble because coming back on the water it flipped and I flipped, of course, but no problem. My husband decided the surf board had to go! (Laughs) It scared the heck out of him because it went right to the bottom, you know? When it goes down it goes right to the bottom. But, we went up to Indian River every year. It was a ritual. We stayed a week or two weeks, whatever.

We rented a cottage. My husband did not want a cottage because he said, “I’m on vacation I am not working and people with cottages work!” and that was his statement and I appreciated it. I didn’t have to do it either.

We were fishermen and we would go fishing. Tom and I would go fishing, the kids went fishing with him also, and we’d catch whatever the limit was, 200 or whatever, come home and. We had a long table and we’d move it into the garage and he’d sit on one side and I and he’d gut ‘em and I’d fillet ‘em out and we’d freeze ‘em and we had fish all winter. Yep. Nice perch, or whatever and walleye. It was a fun time.

I wouldn’t really enjoy doing it anymore but we did have fun at that point. We had friends that went up at the same time. I had to make my last trip up there with another friend and go back to all the old haunts because we’d go to Indian River, and then we’d go to Petoskey and Harbor Springs. Harbor Springs was one of my favorite places. It’s a beautiful, beautiful place. I always enjoyed going shopping. A lot of galleries and all those things I like, and boats, all kinds of boats.

We also traveled east to Maine, and my husband and I did a Windjammer cruise out of Camden, Maine one time. That was a real experience. South America…I’ve been to Mallorca, been to Hawaii three times, I’ve been to Caracas and south to Mexico. We traveled to Florida often because Tom’s folks were down there and lived down there, so we drove to Florida. Now my oldest daughter lives in Florida. My two boys live in Stanford, Virginia. They are close to Quantico, and my youngest son is in Quantico now. He worked at headquarters before he went to Iraq.

My oldest son works for a government contractor as a marine I believe and it’s on a dog project. He’s not a dog lover but he’s working on this project which is a big thing they have going. Well, it’s the bones of the organizations he’s working with to make it more efficient.

I have always had goals in my life. I’ve always had – every year I make lots of goals. January 1 is a big day. Clean out the drawers and clean out the papers and that kind of stuff. Don’t wait until February or March if you can keep from it.

But, I always had a goal of 50 projects that I wanted to finish during the year and I was always over, and when I had my show in June I stood in the gallery and I said to myself, “You keep that up and you are going to be right back here in five years and you’re not going to do that!”

So, I am taking a different look at how I am going to proceed and I take my time and I do what I want to do. It’s been a little harder for me to have things ready for a show because I’m getting too darned shook up about it. I just work at it and if it doesn’t get done, well next year. I can have it done by that time.
