Well, one of the nicest times I had was in 1945. That was the year that my father decided to move from Florida to California and they decided I should go with them.
It was in the summer. So, right before school was out they came up to Cincinnati and they picked me up and I drove with them all the way through to California leisurely. They weren’t in any hurry. We stopped to see everything that was sight-seeable and so we went to the Grand Canyon, we went to the caverns in New Mexico, whatever they are now, and anything on the way to see.
We would sleep at night in the motels and of course they paid all my way everything. It was just great, and when we got out there we stayed in a motel in the Los Angeles area for the rest of the summer.
I had my own apartment and they had theirs with a kitchen and dining room and so on and I would eat with them, but every day I would take walks. I was very fond of walking always.
So I walked and I saw a place that cars were going in and it turned out it was the Huntington Museum, and I thought, well I’ll go there! So for days after that I would go to the Huntington Museum and I saw the picture painting and I saw the Blue Boy and other works of art, and they had a lovely cactus garden, a Japanese tea garden, and that sort of thing and I just loved those days when I did that.
