The Dean of Women Was Fired for Being Drunk, so at Age 24, I Got Her Job

I look back on what a flip-head I was! No, I didn’t know you really had to be prepared for anything but marriage. I mean, I wanted to teach so after college I, again, like my dad going in to get his license, I went into a couple of schools and I had no teaching, but you didn’t need it then to go to private school. So, I walked in and started teaching English like a job and I got hired. So, I taught high school English for a number of years, but our lives were basically fun.

But I taught English and that was fun. I taught high school English and I taught at one school in Boston and then I taught at another school in New York. In the New York school – (Laughs) there were three Christians in the school and I was one of them and that was just so interesting. Very, very high functioning kids who knew their music and their art and they lived in New York and their parents had come over and they were also very smart and talented.

They came in as immigrants and were the tailors…but, that was lots of fun. I taught English there and then the Dean of Women fell down the stairs and broke her leg at the school and I became Dean of Women and I was 24! The Dean of Women was drunk! She fell down the stairs! So then they made me the Dean of Women and it was lots of fun. Yeah! I mean, life was fun! Uncomplicated, unlike yours and all that went on.
