How I Beat a Captain at His Own Game

All my life I’ve done accounting, commercial accounts, military pay, and payroll. I’ve worked in the commercial field, and work with people. But every vacation time I went back and worked on the ranch. I helped stack hay. I’ve done cattle round – ups.

Back to Alaska for a moment, I worked commercial accounts. One day, while I was working through my lunch hour, I had to get payroll in, so people could get paid.

One day an officer came up and demanded his pay record.

I told him: “sir, please come back when the windows open.” I’ve got to get payroll in right now.

He said to me: “if you were my wife…”

I said to him: “sir, you come with me.”

I took him straight up to the colonel and left him. (Laughter)

I’d bet he had never seen anything like that!

When the window did open and he came down to get his pay record, he looked at me, spread his arms like Jesus on the cross, and said: “she already nailed me once today!”

At least he had a sense of humor.
