I taught in the black section of Cincinnati. My school was almost entirely black children. I taught third grade there and after a while I was moved to another section of the city and then another section.
They moved me around. I ended up in a very good section and I took an apartment there in Mount Washington it was called, a suburb of Cincinnati.
Well, I was out on a teaching job about 10 years, and it was from 1950 to 1960 I stayed home and took care of the children and then I started to teach again about 1960.
There was nothing wrong with teaching in the black school district. I got along very well with the children and it was interesting, I would walk after school instead of taking a bus. I would sometimes walk into the downtown section of Cincinnati, so I walked right through the streets of the black section and there was never any problem at all.
The only problem in the school was there were four third grades and I had the lowest of the four. That meant that I didn’t have very bright children and so it was a little hard to teach, otherwise it was nice.
