A Priest Bends the Marriage Rules for Me

When I was growing up we lived directly across the street from the church. All of my aunts and uncles were deacons in the church. My aunt was the choir mistress. So, yes, we were very involved in the church.

My mother was in the Eastern Star; my father was in the Masonic Lodge. You know, very conservative English.

And my school was a united church school, a private school. We went to chapel every morning; that’s how we started our day. So I guess I had a lot of religion growing up although I didn’t really feel indoctrinated. It was just how I grew up.

And, I was married in the Catholic Church here which I considered a huge hurdle. First I was a divorced person, and number two, not catholic!

Here in Mexico when they ask you if you are a Christian they mean are you a catholic? If you’re not catholic they don’t consider you Christian.

My former husband Heriberto had a good friendship with the priest here who was named Jesus. Oddly enough, my birthday and Jesus’ were on the same day, Christmas Eve. So we had Christmas Eve dinner together. And Christmas Eve dinner is traditionally Christmas dinner for Mexicans. So I had a tight bond with this priest before we were married. I think that’s the only reason he married us. He let us slide.
