We were Methodist. My father was a Baptist. When he married my stepmother, he quit going to the Baptist church and went to the Methodist church. All my kids were raised in the Methodist religion.
I went to church every Sunday when I was growing up. I still went most Sundays in southern California. I took the kids to the Methodist church because that’s where we’d been going. That’s where all of my kids were baptized. Every Sunday we went, rain or shine. That probably worked until the middle kids were in the third or fourth grade and then we quit going.
Sometimes church is overrated. When we moved up here the church elders came to visit us, for us to go to this Methodist church over here. They didn’t know us from Adam and the first thing they did was they asked for money. That just set me against them. I don’t know why. I mean, I know you have to donate money to them to keep it going, but not from your first meeting. That’s the first thing that comes up. I believe that you can go outside and worship under the trees outside without having to go in a church. I think that was what I enjoyed about camping. I don’t need a special building. I still say my prayers every night.
