In 1957, a Billy Graham Crusade in Madison Square Gardens Changed Our Lives

Yes, my grandparents and my parents always went to church, and Eli and I brought his family too. They always went to church. His father was great on church and his mother too.

We were brought up in the Methodist faith and of course my grandparents were Presbyterians, now we’re Presbyterians, so we always went to church.

I remember sometimes when we were in Sunday school, kids, they’d have, “You’re early, you’re on time,” and then they’d flip it over, “You were late.” So many times it said, “You were late,” when we got there because mother always wanted to wash the dishes before we went to church cause she’d have to come home and get dinner. We didn’t eat out then like we do now.

I was faithful at church and took our children to church and everything and I always thought I was Christian. But we were in New York and we saw where Billy Graham Crusade was going to be at Madison Square Gardens in 1957 and I said, “I want to go.”

So, we went and our boys were with us and when he was talking I realized the Lord was saying, “You know who I am but you’ve never put me in your heart,” so we went forward and we accepted Jesus in our hearts that day. What a change it’s made in our lives!

The bible became so interesting! We wore our bible out and it really has made a change in our life, in our marriage and in everything.

So many people don’t realize that you have to ask Him in your heart. You go to church and hear the sermons and everything. I helped to teach Sunday school and all like that, but I didn’t have Jesus in my heart. What a difference it makes! Yeah! So, since then I’ve led bible studies. I had a bible study in my home for five years and I led bible studies for ten years.

I did a lot of auxillary work helping out the hospital, county home, Sherman House, all the axillaries. I love doing that sort of thing for people, helping people out.

And I love to listen to preachers. I tape ministers and listen to them at night, yep. We go to Sunday school every Sunday morning. Yep, so, Jesus means a lot to me and the bible means a lot to me. It’s the only way to live.

That’s the reason I have joy in my heart all the time. People say, “How is it you can be so happy?” and I say, “I have Jesus in my heart and the bible says he’s the joy of my life,” so, it makes a difference. I feel sorry for these people who get so depressed. I just wish they had Jesus in their heart.
