To Win Ginger, I had to Compete with a Large Cadre of Other Guys

After Business School I went to work for the international part of IBM in the financial side of it, the World Trade Corporation in New York City. I was very interested in international business.

I had traveled a lot and my father was in international business and I was interested in the computer business. In those days IBM was still a smallish company by today’s standards. So, I went to work in New York at their international headquarters in New York City in the financial side.

I was there – I am trying to think of the exact chronology here. I was there…well, actually let me go back now because Ginger is starting to get in the picture.

The summer, after my freshman year of college, I was working on a boat out of Edgerton.

Did I say “work?”

This was not a tough job!

It was a family that had a 52 ft yacht that had five sons. Usually one son was home every year and this was the first year there was no son. The boat was big enough that the guy who owned it needed someone else on board who knew what the hell they were doing. They took friends and people out to go sailing. So, I was the hired hand and I lived on the boat.

This was in Edgerton. So, that was a pretty plush job even though it was working. I ate with the family for meals.

Anyway, Ginger had her appendix removed that summer and she was visiting her uncle who so she was there for a week.

I was sitting somewhere, a think at a bar actually, I’m not sure, but she walked down the street with two friends, one of whom I knew. I went to say hello the friend I knew and I met Ginger for the first time there that summer.

I had a date or two with her then. She was only there for a week. We kept communication but not heavy and she came down to Princeton for the next three years about once a year. I was so focused on school, and playing hockey, and lacrosse, and studies, and I just didn’t have that many dates and she was very popular so getting a date with her was very tough. She had about 10 guys on the string at all times. So, I had to compete with a large cadre of other guys.

Anyway, she was a year behind me in college at Kanaka College, so she went to work in Boston teaching school for the second years I was in the Navy.

So, I was pretty excited about going to business school because she was going to be there in Boston. Well, it turns out she moved to California when I moved to Boston so she wasn’t there. She had met a guy who was in law school while she was there who she became engaged to later – there’s a long tale! And so she wasn’t there when I was in business school.

We started to date some when she broke the engagement and came back east and lived in New York. I taught her how to ski, actually, during business school. Her family had a place in Vermont so we went up several times to Vermont and learned to ski there, several times. I got the chronology wrong. It was later on she was engaged and broke the engagement, but anyway, we saw each other some but not a lot then. I was in business school. Then I moved to New York and she was in New York, sort of. That’s when we really started to see each other a lot more.

There are a lot of funny stories. For example, when I was in business school I was supposed to meet her in New York for dinner. I got a, in those days, a telegram saying, “Sorry I can’t meet you in New York. I’m engaged.” She was in California. Full stop.

There was a guy she was also dating, who I knew a little bit and he was there and he was supposed to meet her in New York and we were talking and he pulled out his cable which he got – or telex – the same day with the exact same words on it, “Sorry, I can’t meet you for dinner tonight I’m engaged.” That was one of her stable of admirers. Anyway, yeah there are many stories.

So, I went to New York and went to work for the international part of IBM Word Trade Corporation as a financial analyst right across the street from United Nations on UN Plaza.

She was there most of the time but she was – I guess she was there all the time, with different jobs. We dated quite a bit and then…let’s see…how did it all go? (Laughs) Well, again a lot of funny stories.

Here’s another. I asked to marry her at one point and she said no, she wasn’t ready. Then about six months later she asked me to marry her. That’s when we actually got married which is kind of a funny story. There are a whole lot of entertaining events between that but anyway. So, it was 1962 that I moved to New York and we got married in 1964, so it was two years later and we got married in New Jersey which is where she was from. So maybe you should get Ginger down here to talk about the two of us.
