Lou Learns the Art of Brewing

So, that became a reality and we bought the brewery. I was in high school at the time this happened, but I was working in the distributing company all the time I was in high school. In 1936 we bought the brewery and I moved down to Findlay and worked with the brewery and that was the era I also went to Notre Dame in 1936.

Throughout the summers I lived at Findlay and went to Notre Dame.

After I graduated from Notre Dame I went to Seibel Institute of Technology which was located in Chicago. They were, at that time, they were…I don’t know if they are in existence now but at that time they were on Montana Street. They were a brewers and bakers school.

That was the year of 1941 I went to brewers school. Of course, I had been working at the brewery all this time and living in Findlay in the summertime. I was still in school and Pearl Harbor came about, so right after Pearl Harbor, January 1, 1942 I went to Columbus, Ohio and enlisted in the Army.

I did that. I wasn’t trying to be a hero or anything but my father was a prominent Democrat and community leader in Toledo and he was also, I think, he was chairman of a draft board in the city of Toledo, and some stories start getting out that Mike’s kid probably won’t be called in the reserves when all the rest of them were, you know? So, I thought maybe I better save him the embarrassment and I went down and registered. From that time on I was with the military.
