There was a prayer I ran across someplace. When you get older you go to a lot of funerals and prayer services and you get those little prayer cards. I think that’s where this card came from, which said: “lord, as a great this new day let me be ever mindful of your divine love. Guide me to demonstrations of kindness and love to everyone I meet today.”

I ran across that card two years ago and I repeat that saying every day now. I find that if I am kind to everyone I know… (Voice trails off)

When I repeat the prayer I add something extra at the end that wasn’t written there. I say: “let me be particularly thankful for my family, my extended family and all my friends. Thank you, lord”

I’ve met Colin Powell. I’ve met Supreme Court Justice Byron White. When I worked in Colorado he was our lawyer. We had to go in blind to pick up our property. We even had to cut the labels out of our clothing. Byron White Used to laugh at us and our feeble attempts at secrecy. He would say: “you guys do all this stuff, and it would take me five minutes to find out where you are from!”

I’ve met Andrew Young. I was on a dais is with he and Colin Powell.

I think that we have been fortunate in coming here, to Aptos particularly. The environment is terrific and we have a beautiful place to live. We have a beautiful house. We’ve been very successful. We don’t have Cadillacs but we have Hondas that work very well.

I am most successful when I do the right job of planning for our last years. We are self-sufficient. We are lucky enough to have a long-term care policy. We paid a lot of money for it but we will be taking care of in our own home if things get bad.

We have enough that, unless we lived to be 122, we will be OK. I consider that a major success. I appreciate being able to say to Peggy: “you don’t have to worry. If I die tomorrow here’s what will happen to you.”

That gives me comfort. I just feel good. I don’t have to worry about anything. And when I don’t have to worry about anything I can do anything I want that my own pace.
