I most grateful for the homestead.  We learned.  We learned to work.  We learn to communicate.  We lived out in the country.  If he didn’t learn those things you are never going to get out.

One year, they moved the schoolhouse and we didn’t go to school that year. Mom taught us.  The next year they moved the schoolhouse back.  My mom’s cousin stepped it off from his house to the schoolhouse.  And then from the school house to our house.  We had fewer steps than they did.

Mom said: “turn around, and walk up the damned hill, and count the steps!”

That was the end of that.
