Harold was ill for twenty years. He was on the dialysis machine almost fourteen years. We did it at home for twelve years, and then we had a center here in Hanford, so he was on it there for two years. But we were the… there was only one other man that was on a machine here in Hanford at the time we went on it. It was really the old way, huge machine, and we didn’t have throwaway things. We had—what do I want to say?—everything had to be sterilized and used again and again. All the equipment. And the room had to be spotless, never a spot of blood anyplace. And we had a bedroom that we took over. Doug was killed shortly before we went on the machine. He was planning to help us, and so after he passed away it was hard to do anything with that room and take things down. But finally when it became the room that we were going to have to make into a dialysizing room, well, we took everything out. We had to take the carpet out and put linoleum in and fix it. Take the closet doors off and make the shelves, so it was all for our equipment, supplies.
Doug was killed in a truck accident. He had a blowout on his car and he went back to get help at a house and didn’t get good help, because a bunch of people there that were just transients, and then he went to another house and phoned for the truck and everything. And then as he was going back, for some reason he was in the road and a truck came around the curve and hit him. And we don’t really know all the particulars. We don’t know if somebody knocked him down maybe, which there were a lot of things that pointed to that, and took money or whatever. We don’t know. But none of it ever made sense. We went a long line of things trying to find out, but it never did. And he was taken to the wrong place for the wrong county to start with. It happened right over the line, and then the people that were involved, they couldn’t contact them. They were… the police officer moved. There were a lot of strange things that happened.
