Despite A Desire to Join, My Lack of Education Keeps Me out of the Service

When I was 18 years old in San Antonio, Texas, I went to see the Sergeant there and I want to sign in to go in. At that time, there wasn’t anything going on, you know. But the Sergeant told me, he said, I can maybe help you, but because you got no education at all, we don’t need anybody right now. I don’t think I’ll be able to take you in. I was really wanted to go myself in those days. I never went to any war. My cousins yes, but not me.
