I didn’t jump to Canada like the Vietnam did. When the Vietnam War broke out you could see; we were going fishing up in Canada and you’d see 500 hitchhikers within a couple miles all going north. Looked like a, you name it, the excursion or something! (Laughs)
It was the hippies going north. They went north up there the whole time we was going up we seen them. They were all hitchhiking to get out of the service. But, no, I stayed here and I was drafted.
I was drafted for Korea. I was the first one went out of Findlay. I was stationed down in Fort Knox in Kentucky.
I was the right age, all the rest of them were younger. I was 22, almost 23 when they drafted me. The rest of the guys were anywhere from, oh, 19, 20, but I spent my time down at Fort Knox. They called that “Garden of Money”; they had the gold mine down there! (Laughs) Did you hear that?
