I certainly remember rationing

WWII, Vietnam, Korea and Iraq

During world war two, I was a kid; during Korea I was in high school. During Vietnam I was teaching.

During world war two, we used to collect the tinfoil from gum wrappers and turn that in. In this summer’s we would pick milkweed which has very fine fibers. It was woven into cell that was used in parachutes. During the summer times our elementary and junior high playgrounds were used as training areas for soldiers.

I certainly remember rationing. We got pound of sugar every so often. Meat was very scarce. My father had a grocery store and when we would get in meat, we would fry up hamburgers and can them. We sold them but it wasn’t very successful!

We never had much milk either. We never had a car until about 1954 so we didn’t worry about gasoline rationing. We went everywhere on the bus or on foot. I would walk one mile or more to school and back, or to the swimming pool. I did this from the time I was in second grade. At this time he didn’t have to worry about children being snatched.

My mother paid all her bills –the gas company, the lector company, the department store – in person, with cash. If we didn’t have the money to buy something, we didn’t buy it. No charging!

My uncle Johnny and my uncle Bob were both in the war. Because my father was making steel, he was exempt. When my uncle Bob came home from Persia, we were very happy to see him.

My uncle Bob probably had the greatest potential to see action during the war. I don’t know where my uncle Johnny was stationed, that he had a desk job.

Korea

In Korea, Alex, the husband of one of my best friends Tillie, was out on the front lines. Many of my college friends served in the Korean War. We had a lot of older male students. My brother was stationed in Germany, with Elvis!

My brother went over on an airplane, and came back on a ship. The only other time he flew anywhere was when all high of state played in a championship football game about four years ago. He will not get in an airplane.

My brother was at the same pace with Elvis but they kept him separated from a list of the rest of the troops.

Vietnam

I didn’t know too many people who went to Vietnam. Some of my older friends had sons who went, but I was only about 30 years old while Vietnam was happening. I didn’t have many friends who are really involved in Vietnam.

Iraq

The war today is one that I find totally senseless. The fact that it’s been going on longer than the Second World War is amazing to me. I don’t know what the answer is, but I think it is senseless for so many people to die.
