Our Home was a 10-by-18-Foot Wooden Shack

This was the house I was born in. Mom and Dad had been married and they had a child that was born dead. And then two years later I came along, and I was born in that little place. It’s nothing but a shack. It’s a ten by about eighteen feet shack. And then on that same piece of land, which they bought, they put several of these together and made the house that I grew up in. So the living room was this size, the dining room was this size, the bedroom was this size. And that’s where I grew up until I got married. On Findlay Avenue. 727 Findlay Avenue in Los Angeles. It was called Los Angeles, but it was East Los Angeles. And I was born in ’23.

And it’s still Findlay Avenue. Well, a lot of people came from Ohio at that time. My mother came from Ohio. Because they moved in there and camped behind that friend of my Grandma’s until they could find that little house to rent out on the thing, and then Grandpa kept that five acres and bought it. The money from that is how I went to college. He just was a very successful farmer. Truck farmer.
