During this time I stayed home raising my child. My son went to high school, and then went to college. But when the war came along, he was drafted. Actually, he volunteered. So many people were getting killed, that it worried me. But my son worked in the kitchen, and he learned to cook.
When he came back, I used to tease him: “c’mon into the kitchen and let’s do some cooking.”
He used to say: “mom it’s nothing fancy. Just potatoes – mashed potatoes, boiled potatoes, fried potatoes.
Stories of Mexico
When we used to sit around and talk as a family, it was usually about Mexico. My family couldn’t understand how I survived life in Mexico as a young kid. I didn’t miss Mexico. And my son never really cared to go there.
Some of my folks are still there, and I have gone on trips to see them. Perhaps I’ve made five trips altogether. I still have relatives living in Mazatlán. But it’s easy to lose track of people.
Now, the tourists have taken over everything.
I’m Proud of My Son
Since my husband passed away, there’s only my son to take care of me. He’s been a very good son, a good honest businessman, and everyone praises him. I’m very proud of him.
A Moment Burned into my Memory Forever
The biggest thing that left an impression on me was when the train was stopped during the Mexican revolution. The revolutionaries killed a man right in front of me. That has stuck in my mind.
My son moved me from San Jose to Santa Cruz. He has a home here. One day, I fell over; I simply lost my balance. That’s why I’m at Aegis. I was all alone at the house, so I called the next door neighbor called my son.
My son checked out several places, but he likes this one the best.
Favorite Mexican and American Foods
My favorite food is fried chicken. When the cook here makes chicken he makes it so the chicken falls off the bone. That’s a good cook!
In Mexico, we used to tamales. They are a lot of work to make. I like enchiladas. For fruit I like the cherimoya. They don’t grow that here.
