Ours wasn’t a very big farm compared to nowadays. We had 80 acres and my dad bought 40 more later. The 80 acres was given to us by my mom’s father, but we started with normally just corn and wheat.

As I got probably in my lower teens dad started raising tomatoes, we raised red beets a few times, peas, lima beans – which was unusual in those days – we didn’t go to town. Delphos was three miles away and I was in high school before I knew how to get to Delphos. We just didn’t travel.

Landeck had a little general store and it had groceries and a little hardware and there was the church and the school so our life existed in about three miles from home.
