My dad worked at Pearl Harbor and I remember going with him to look at the ships. Some of the ships are now under water because of December 7, 1941.
Strange as it may seem, my father made a bet with a sailor that we would be at war within months. There was suspicion that Japan was going to attack. I remember the placards saying that there were was going to be a mock air attack on various evenings. It was about May, and the authorities were advising everyone to put out their lights.
After December 7, some people said that Roosevelt knew about the attack in advance. They said he wanted to get into a war. They were angry because they said he couldn’t least have given them ten or fifteen minutes to prepare, rather than getting all those people killed.
My father got us all together and we sailed back to America before Pearl Harbor. A week after we got back, Pearl Harbor was bombed. I couldn’t believe it, but my father knew. He just knew something was going to happen.
